Simple Pages in a Flash for a Multi Scrap Page Event

Today I want to share the idea of using simple layouts to help you deal with a multi-page scrapping event.  As part of my 50th birthday celebration last year we went to the Aiken Spring Steeplechase on my actual birthday.  After the Steeplechase we had friends over for a party picnic/party with games.  It was a wonderful birthday!  But scrapping the day took many pages.  I had the elements of the Steeplechase as well as outdoor and inside photos from the evening.   I had previously scrapped four pages of of the evening party, but I had not yet attempted to scrap the Steeplechase.

I began by dividing the photos and memorabilia into categories:  Intro, family and friends, carriage parade, and Steeplechasing.  I combined the memorabilia with two photobooth looking photo strips and a photo of a single horse and rider.  I used two coordinating pieces of black and white print cardstock, white cardstock matting, and a white pen for doodling and created the first two pages.

Above, I had saved an extra copy of the invitations we sent to family and friends to join us at the Steeplechase, matted it on white cardstock, and combined with the photo strips to create an intro page.

Page two includes my admission badge from the event, the actual event program, a single rider photo, and bit of ribbon and a cardstock sticker.  Easy peasy yet nice looking.  The print cardstock was a great touch.

Pages three and four contain five of my favorite photos from the many taken during the carriage parade.  HINT:  Do not feel like you MUST use every photo.  You can select photos to represent the event/location (I chose my favorite of the Grand Canyon too, and did not scrap all 70+ photos).  The largest of the photos is a 5x7, three are 4x6's, and the smaller photo is 2.5x6 inches.

I chose a simple black cardstock background and cut a single sheet of traditional equestrian looking plaid paper in half to decorate the page.  I chose a pale yellow color from the plaid and matted the five photos on yellow.  I added chipboard brackets and a chipboard sticker, along with layered flowers.  Again, simple and easy - let the focus be on the photos.

Pages five and six were the easiest.  I had enlarges some of my photos to show details of the event.  I had four photos - an 8x10, a 5x7, a 10x4, and a 4x6.    I matted the photos on white and light blue cardstock.  The 8x10 and a title fill the first page - with a "take the jump" sticker.

Page six is a bit crowded, but I did not want to spread the "Chasing" photos over another two pages... So I squeezed it all in.  I have very few embellishments, again, because the photos are the focal point.  I felt that too many embellies distracted from the photos.

Pages seven and eight are the final two Steeplechase pages - family and friends.  And while I added a little detail to these pages, again they were quite simple.  The pages were created with a speckled navy blue cardstock base, a sheet of blue and green print cut in half, and a blue and white print.  I picked up on the green in the print to use as base matting.

The letters were cut from the M.S. Seasonal Art cartridge.  And the final embellishments were the layered flowers, in blues and whites.

And that is how you make eight quick pages of the same event using a limited number of photos to represent the overall event.  I broke the event down into phases - and scrapped two simple pages for each of the four phases.

Tomorrow I will be announcing the winner of the Custom Crops gift voucher - Not an April fool's joke!!!

Layouts, Layouts, Layouts... And I am still behind.

I love the saying, "God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind that I will never die." (Bill Watterson)  That saying applies to me and my actual scrapbooking - in other words - LAYOUTS.  I have quite a number of photos that I have never gotten around to scrapping.

This last weekend I had the pleasure of spending three days scrapping at Lake Murray - thank you Beth and Sally.  I managed to complete 21 12x12 layouts (one of which was Buzz Lightyear).  To give you an idea of how far behind I am, I found photos from Christmas 2009 and photos from my birthday last year.  I had scrapped part of the photos, but not all.

In honor of my 50th birthday last year, my girlfriends had a birthday crop for me.  It was so fun - good friends, good food, doing what we like to do!    I had scrapped some of the birthday photos, but not all.  This is a scraptique kit modified (or as I say, "Susanized") to fit the photos.

The two page layout utilizes Teresa Collins papers - lots of pink, white and black.  And of course lots of textile textures.

I love the elements on the right page, the three file folders.  Each of the three folders opens to reveal hidden information.  The smaller two folder contain the journaling.  The larger folder contains the photo below.

If you have not already  done so be sure to leave a comment under the previous post to be elegible for the Custom Crops gift voucher blog candy.  The winner will be posted on Friday.

Tomorrow I will share how simple layouts can help you deal with multi page scrap events, while still looking nice.

A few more pages of the Disney Scrapbook

Posing with Nemo

I am going to share a few more pages from the Garland's Disney album.  I gave the album to Ruth yesterday and she seemed to really, really like it.  In fact, she said it made her want to go back again - soon!  I shouldn't admit it, but it had the same effect on me!!  :-)

Smooching at Epcot and posing with Pooh and company.

I am not sure if you can see what the Garlands are wearing - they each have on a Disney hockey sweater.  Bill is wearing the Grumpy Miners.... Hence the cute saying in the lower left corner, "I'm Grumpy... What's your excuse?"

The weather was all over the place during our week in Orlando.  The first half of the week was cold and windy, but the last two days were hot.  It was fun, but crazy.

This is my favorite layout in the book:  Nice Ears!  The last day Bill and Ruth finally bought the required Disney ears, complete with names.  They were very cute!

Tomorrow we will officially leave the happiest place on earth and head back to seasonal scrapping!

Guess What I finished? Disney for the Garlands

 Title Page

One of my biggest accomplishments over the weekend (when I was away at the lake for a girls scrapping weekend) was I managed to complete the Disney album on which I have been working. Our friends the Garlands went to Disney with our family FOUR YEARS ago and had not done a thing with their photos.  I decided for their birthday gifts to scrap some of their Disney photos.

MGM Studios

Mr. Garland smuggled the Disney DVD to me and I printed photos.  Since then I have been chugging along on Disney.  The final book contains 24 pages, but really it could have been much larger.  But at least they will have a nice overview of their trip.  (Click on any photo to see the image larger).

@MGM for the evening with Mrs. Incredible and the dancing Christmas light show

Since I have already shared some parts of the album with you I will not share all of the pages.  However, I will share a few layouts over the next few days.

Last of the Weekend Layouts

This is the last of layouts that I will be sharing from last weekend's crop at Lake Murray (thank you Sally & Beth)!! Let me see... We featured Aaron, then Bethany... So it must be time for Ian. I must tell you that my photo stash of Ian has declined significantly since he went away to college. I am going to have to speak to him about being IN the photos he takes and posts.

The photos in this layout were from January 2009 when the Carolina Panthers were in the playoffs. I was excited that I had a reason to use the Carolina-Like Panther cut that I designed a couple of years ago.  Sadly they were destroyed by the Cardinals.... and it rained… And the quarterback threw a zillion interceptions…. OUCH. My poor guys - there they were in the rain watching their team loose. My husband assured me that except for the game the guys enjoyed their trip to Charlotte. That is one of those "huh" statements. They only went to Charlotte for the game!!! Yes they did spend the night and have dinner, etc. But they went to see the game!!!

I think the look on Aaron’s and Ian’s faces in this photo says it all - they look so annoyed with the game. I will add that Ian was better trained as a scrapper child - I not only got photos, he also brought me his game ticket to go on his page. Alas, now I would be happy to just have photos!!

And finally I will share this layout of Doug and me on New Year’s Eve. Not my best layout design, but I loved the paper. Note that the dancing couples in the back ground match my dress and Doug’s sweater. … I really did not insist that he wear that color…. Honest. This was a great set of paper that I found at Scrap Your Trip. Thanks Julie.

Weekend at the Lake Scrap Peek #2

Today's peek at my weekend crop projects will feature my daughter and her activities.  Do you detect a pattern here?  Yesterday was the older son, followed by my daughter - the middle child - today.  Hmmmm.  Who do you think will be featured tomorrow?

This two page layout features Bethany and her friend Bailey who attended the Charleston Green Fair.  I was especially excited to be able to use the letter G from Tie the Knot cartridge for my capital letters in the page title.  I welded lower case Plantin to the Tie the knot caps.

Bethany and Bailey were photographed with the event "mascots" and the picture appeared in the local Charleston paper.  For those who may not be familiar with our State, Charleston is three hours away and we do not get the Charleston paper in Aiken.  Silly us, we get the Aiken Paper.  Bethany did not get a copy of the actual newspaper for me, but she did send me a link to the on-line pdf of the article.  I was able to the save the pdf article and print it onto cardstock.  I also was able to right click the photo, save it and print it and create this double page layout.

You may recall the first page of the two page layout below - the left page was created for a BBTB2 challenge using the phase cut In Style from Graphically Speaking.  I also designed a second page for the layout.  I have found that 99% of my layouts are double page spreads.   When I used the left page for BBTB2, I printed the photos out quickly with dying toner.  For the final scrapbook version, I printed the photos at Shutterfly and cropped them to fit the layout.

I really like how this layout came out. I was especially pleased with the dress stands and the spools of thread.  The dress stands were made using a key cut on JOTS and Belle's dress from DCT.  There is a spool of the thread with a needle on the other Disney princess cartridge, but of course I do not have that cartridge.  So I used George and created my own spools.  The spool was made by welding two round corner triangles together with a barrel cut in the middle.  I then cut the barrel in the color I wanted the thread to be.  I had cut a snip of silver paper for the needle and used my markers to draw in the thread.

In my ususal style, I finished both layouts with doodles and dots.  I will add that I do use a ruler to draw the lines on my layout... My hand is not steady enough to trust lines to free hand style.

As Promised - The First Peek at my Weekend at the Lake

Here are the first two layouts from my weekend at the lake - both layouts feature my older son or his activities.  The photo above and immediately below are of Aaron and his sweet, sweet girlfriend.  I used SEI Moravia paper, including one of the shaped pages in the kits.  I cut the shaped page in half-ish (60/40) and used part on each of the two pages.  I love this set of papers, they are so rich looking and they worked wonderfully for this late fall photo shoot.

The next two photos are from the Fleetwood Mac concert layout that I did for my older son.  Aaron, his girlfriend and his roommate saw Fleetwood Mac in Charlotte sometime last summer.  They came home with lots of photos of the band and no photos of the themselves.... Insert a big sigh here if you are a scrapping mom.

These two pages were scrapped on Crate paper that I purchased at last summer's scrapbook convention - also in Charlotte.  I love this set of paper - the colors and the shaped cuts area wonderful.  There were lots of embellies included in the kit, but I suplimented with those by adding my own crocheted flowers and brads.  I think the flowers match so well that they look like they came with the paper!!

I photographed several layouts as well as a new craft technique on which I have spent two afternoons this week.  I will share more on that later in the week.....   Yes, that is a tease to bring you back!!!!

Horrid Photos of Fun Projects

I tried to capture some quick photos to share with you of four double page layouts I made last weekend.  My camera battery was flashing a low power alert and apparently it decided it should therefore exhibit low quality output.  Grrrr. The layout above is of my hubby using his first Football Fire Starter... LOL..... OHHH and about this battery thing.... Know that the layouts look far better than these photos and know that I WILL change the battery in my camera before we head to the coast tomorrow to celebrate (a week late) my older son's b-day!!!

And speaking of Mr. Birthday-Man, there he is shaving his full beard so that he could transform into Harvey Dent from Batman... Better known as Two Face.  The Two Face thing was icky, but the shaving photos were a hoot!

And there is Two Face and his lovely girl friend, Crissie.... Errrr, I mean Poison Ivy... Yes that would be another Batman villian.  They were pretty cute from the photos I saw... Well, cute aside from that icky Two Face thing....

And speaking of Halloween costumes, here is Bethany and two friends in Charleston, SC, doing the Charleston, as 1920's flappers.  They were adorable.

I will have lots of projects to share next week as Jeannie Phillips and I will be sharing the Guest Designer spots on Christmas With the Cricut.  We are both excited!!!

Pumpkin Patch Farms

I really like the challenge cut for this weeks Bitten by the Bug projects.  It is the sign on the Christmas Noel cartridge.  I have long admired the adorable sign, but had yet to design a project which included this particular element.  I was excited when Regina chose this cut and asked us to use brown and "go fall."

I decided to go whimpsical in my approach, pretty much abonding reality! I cut my center tree in a polkadots and I used a smaller polkadot for the pumpkin on the farm sign and the left page matting.  I cut extra leaves to scatter about using three different papers, two solds and more polkadots!

I used two different Bazzill cardstocks for the pumpkins, the highlighting a few of the pumpkins with a bling cardstock.

I finished th project off with ribbons and white ink.....  My daughter and her college roommates usually to pumpkin picking; I can't wait to see this year's photos on this cute layout!!

New Projects and Cut Files

It's Monday and you know what that means: new projects complete with directions, photos, and cut files have posted at Custom Crops! I had three projects post today: Winter Wonderland layout, Sleigh Ride in the Woods card, and Postage Stamp layout. The Winter layout includes lessons on heat embossing.

I really like the new SEI Winter Song paper that I used for the Winter layout. I may need to order more of this before we are heavily into the holiday season (and it sells out - insert shreak here). The paper comes with flocked sheets, glittered sheets, and foiled sheets of paper - all of which are cardstock weight and some of them are double sided. Have I convinced you that you want this paper?? It really is very nice.

Both the winter layout and the sleigh ride card were created using the Winter Woodlands cartridge. The postage stamp layout was created entirely with an old favorite: Base Camp. Also, the postage stamp layout article might be worth reading - it offers specific examples of when a postage stamp layout is beneficial in your scrapping. I have used this type of layout a couple of times, though my favorite is the band layout I discuss in the article.

I know I probably do not need to write this, but to get to mylist of articles you just need to click on the Custom Crops blinky on the left side of my blog. Please do leave a comment at Custom Crops if you like the projects - - We LOVE feedback!!!!
